IML’s Priority Item Crosswalk: Meeting the Task
A clear, up-to-date task list is essential for a successful training program. IML’s Priority Item Crosswalk is designed to help instructors set and meet the goals their students and programs must reach.
IML’s Priority Item Crosswalk was developed in response to the instructors’ need to show the correlation between NATEF tasks and their curriculum. To receive ASE certification in a training area, programs must cover 95% of the Priority 1 (P-1) items, 80% of the P-2s, and 50% of the P-3s for that area. IML's Automotive Technology curriculum covers 100% of all tasks in all eight training areas.

The Priority Item Crosswalk connects each NATEF task to the job sheet where the task is covered. From there, instructors can find the corresponding lesson information that supports the task.
In addition to outlining tasks, the crosswalk is a valuable tool for reaching other individual and program goals.
- The crosswalk provides a complete competency list for the curriculum.
- It can be given to students as a way to track progress and demonstrate the connection between class and shop work and essential job skills.
- Instructors and administrators can use the crosswalk to review and evaluate the program.
- The crosswalk can assist NATEF Evaluation Team Leaders (ETLs) who evaluate individual programs for certification.
In 2005, IML began including a list of ATech trainers that directly address crosswalk tasks. ATech is a recognized leader in the development and production of hands-on and computer-based trainers and instructional materials. As IML modules are updated to reflect changes in the NATEF Task List, they will also be updated to include references to ATech trainers, where applicable.
