Effective Curriculum, Powerful Learning

 Developing effective curriculum isn’t easy.

For nearly 10 years, SMCAA and IML have been working with districts to help them develop, implement, and evaluate local curriculum that is aligned to state standards. We’ve had many successes in developing curriculum and faced many challenges. We’re sure you have too. This e-mail is the first in a series designed to share information about creating, implementing, and managing curriculum. We’ll discuss things that have worked and issues curriculum administrators and developers face. We’ll look at topics on the individual, classroom, and district level. In all cases, the goal is enhanced student learning.

One of our most successful projects has been the development and implementation of the online Electronic Alignment Tool (EATOnline). Since its beginnings as a CD-based alignment tool, EAT has grown and greatly expanded its capabilities. Periodically we will focus on specific aspects of EAT to help curriculum administrators and writers make the most of the benefits and features EAT has to offer.

One such feature is the Selectable Course Curriculum Report. The Selectable Course Curriculum Report is the most flexible report on the Electronic Alignment Tool. It is the only report that allows the user to set the perimeters of the search to show only the information that is needed.

To use the report, log in to EATOnline and go to the Selectable Course Curriculum Report, located under Text Reports on the left side of the screen. Choose the desired grade and course, and then select the specific course information you wish to display. As a default, the report will generate Course Description, Course Rationale, Local Objective Text, and Unit, but the report is easily customized. To do this, check the boxes for any areas you wish to display and uncheck any that are not desired. This allows the user to create a wide variety of clear, useful, and specialized reports.

For example, a district might want to focus for a year on improving assessments. To generate a report to help with this, run the Selectable Course Curriculum Report with only the Assessment Info and Local Objective Text boxes checked. This is a quick, easy way of obtaining a list of course objectives and the assessment that goes with each.

Once the report has been generated, the administrator can review the assessments to make sure they are internally aligned with the objective as required by Fourth Cycle MSIP. The report can also be reviewed to determine if the assessment is formative in nature, meaning that it is providing feedback about student learning during the instruction process, and also whether the assessment is at the level of difficulty or depth of knowledge required by the Missouri Assessment Program.

The Selectable Course Curriculum Report can also be used to generate reports for board review that include only the elements board members need to see. This saves time and paperwork and makes critical information easier to find.

These are only two examples of reports that can be run using the Selectable Course Curriculum function. For quickly highlighting parts of the curriculum or focusing on selected areas for review or development, the Selectable Course Curriculum is a powerful and useful tool for generating flexible, customized reports.
